Design Description

The MALUMI B lamp is a striking fusion of applied art and 1980s aesthetics. Its name, inspired by the word “malumi,” meaning “sailor” in Tamil, evokes travel, discovery, and the search for new forms. The lamp’s design draws on the Memphis movement, known for its bold approach to color, geometry, and form, while maintaining modernist simplicity and functionality.

MALUMI B features the collection’s signature flat-oval, geometric shade, whose form was designed to maintain a balance between proportion and distinctiveness. This is a deliberate nod to modernism, in which simple shapes and clean lines were meant to emphasize modernity and order. UMMO breaks this restraint with an intense navy blue color, thanks to which the lamp becomes a bold accent in the interior.

The MALUMI B version was designed as a pendant lamp with a compact, horizontal form. Its narrow width, combined with its elongated shape, ensures the lamp retains a sense of visual lightness while remaining a striking element of the interior design. The navy blue shade Sapphire Blue RAL 5003 lends it an elegant, deep character and reinforces the design’s geometric expression, blending inspiration from the Memphis aesthetic with a more contemporary approach to color.

Color, geometry, and a deliberately minimalist form make MALUMI B an almost sculptural object—a contemporary piece of furniture that serves both a functional and decorative purpose. This is a lamp that does not try to blend into its surroundings. Its purpose is to attract attention and define the character of a space.

Lamp Components and Functionality

The lamp’s body is made of metal and aluminum, which ensures the structure’s rigidity while keeping its weight to a minimum. The entire lamp is finished in a vibrant Sapphire Blue (RAL 5003), which highlights its geometric form and gives the lamp a bold, elegant character.

MALUMI B is equipped with a built-in LED light source, eliminating the need for a separate bulb. The integrated LED module provides even and soft light distribution, combining functionality with energy efficiency. Two color temperatures are available: 3000K, which provides warmer, more atmospheric light, and 4000K, which offers a neutral color suitable for more functional applications.

The lamp is suspended from two 147-cm-long fabric straps that emphasize its horizontal, graphic form. Additionally, a 190-cm-long polyester-braided cable serves as a practical connection between the fixture and the electrical installation.

An integral part of the design is a navy blue metal ceiling cover measuring 42 cm in length. Its color has been matched to the lamp’s body, ensuring that all elements form a cohesive, uniform composition.

The lamp measures 48 x 5.2 x 38 cm, and the total suspension length is 180 cm. As a result, MALUMI B can be successfully used both as a standalone fixture and as part of a larger lighting arrangement.

Application and IP20 Protection Rating

MALUMI B is designed for indoor use in dry environments. Its compact, horizontal form makes it a perfect fit above a dining room table, coffee table, kitchen island, bar, or in a commercial space.

The Sapphire Blue RAL 5003 color allows the lamp to also serve as a decorative accent, adding depth and character to the interior. When paired with a minimalist interior, it creates a strong, elegant contrast, while in more expressive spaces, it naturally fits into an aesthetic inspired by Memphis and postmodern design.

The deep blue shade pairs well with both neutral colors—such as white, gray, beige, or black—and more bold color combinations. As a result, MALUMI B can serve as both a focal point of a design and an element of a larger, thoughtfully designed composition.

The IP20 protection rating means the lamp is intended for indoor use in environments without direct contact with water.
