Design Description
The MALUMI B lamp is a striking fusion of applied art and 1980s aesthetics. Its name, inspired by the word “malumi,” which means “sailor” in Tamil, evokes travel, discovery, and the search for new forms. The lamp’s design draws on the Memphis movement, known for its bold approach to color, geometry, and form, while maintaining modernist simplicity and functionality.
MALUMI B features the collection’s signature flat-oval, geometric shade, whose form was designed to maintain a balance between proportion and distinctiveness. This is a deliberate nod to modernism, in which simple forms and clean lines were meant to emphasize modernity and order. UMMO breaks this restraint with an intense, melon-colored shade, making the lamp a bold accent in any interior.
The MALUMI B version was designed as a pendant lamp with a compact, horizontal form. Its narrow width, combined with its elongated shape, gives the lamp a sense of visual lightness while still making it a striking element of the interior design. The melon shade, Melon Yellow RAL 1028, gives it an energetic, fresh character and reinforces the design’s geometric expression, blending inspiration from the Memphis aesthetic with a modern approach to color.
Color, geometry, and a deliberately minimalist form make MALUMI B an almost sculptural object—a contemporary piece of furniture that serves both a functional and decorative purpose. This is a lamp that does not try to blend into its surroundings. Its purpose is to attract attention and define the character of a space.
Lamp Components and Functionality
The lamp’s body is made of metal and aluminum, which ensures the structure’s rigidity while keeping its weight to a minimum. The entire lamp is finished in a vibrant Melon Yellow (RAL 1028), which highlights its geometric form and gives the lamp a bold, energetic character.
MALUMI B is equipped with a built-in LED light source, so it does not require a separate bulb. The integrated LED module ensures even and soft light diffusion, combining functionality with energy efficiency. Two color temperatures are available: 3000K, which provides warmer, more atmospheric light, and 4000K, which offers a neutral color suitable for more functional applications.
The lamp is suspended from two 147-cm-long fabric straps that emphasize its horizontal, graphic form. Additionally, a 190-cm-long polyester-braided cable serves as a practical connection between the fixture and the electrical installation.
An integral part of the design is a 42-cm-long, melon-colored metal ceiling cover. Its color has been matched to the lamp’s body, ensuring that all elements form a cohesive, uniform composition.
The lamp’s dimensions are 48 x 5.2 x 38 cm, and the total suspension length is 180 cm. As a result, the MALUMI B can be successfully used both as a single fixture and as part of a larger lighting arrangement.
Application and IP20 Protection Rating
MALUMI B is designed for indoor use in dry environments. Its compact, horizontal form makes it ideal for use above a dining table, coffee table, kitchen island, bar, or in commercial spaces.
The melon-yellow color (Melon Yellow RAL 1028) allows the lamp to also serve as a decorative accent, infusing the interior with energy, freshness, and a vibrant pop of color. When paired with a minimalist interior, it creates a strong, cheerful contrast, while in more expressive spaces, it naturally fits into an aesthetic inspired by the Memphis style and postmodern design.
The warm, intense shade of yellow pairs well with both neutral colors—such as white, gray, beige, or black—and bolder color combinations. It can also serve as an interesting complement to interiors featuring wood, natural materials, and deep, contrasting colors. The IP20 protection rating means that the lamp is intended for indoor use in conditions without direct contact with water.

Designed by
Michał Markiewicz
Designer, interior architect, co-founder and main creator of the UMMO Lighting brand. He comes from Gdansk, Poland, where he developed a passion for design from an early age. Even as a child he created lamps from available materials, rearranging lampshades and experimenting with form. Over time, he naturally gravitated towards interior design and industrial design, combining functionality with aesthetics in his own way.
He graduated with a degree in Interior Design, and also gained experience as a jewelry and furniture designer. Today he focuses on lighting, which he treats as “jewelry of the interior.” - It not only complements the space, but becomes its focal point. He draws inspiration from everyday life: forms, textures and shapes present in the environment.
His creative process involves a journey from sketch to prototype and final product, with functionality being paramount - each lamp must not only catch the eye, but also shine well. Michał's designs are dominated by recyclable materials: metal, glass, wood. UMMO's style is recognizable for its distinctive form and color, as well as its attention to quality and timelessness.
For Michał, local production and sustainable design are particularly important to minimize environmental impact and promote conscious design. UMMO Lighting is a brand that, through his vision, combines aesthetics with responsibility and craftsmanship with modernity.
